There have been reported incidents where some Nokia N70 phones do not work correctly when used with Bluetooth GPS receivers. This guide is written to help owners of Nokia N70, who are having dropped Bluetooth connections and screen freezes when using it in conjunction with Tomtom SatNav software.
The BT74R is compatible with all Bluetooth enabled devices as long as you have a Sat Nav software that is compatible with your device.

Many N70 phones work perfectly with the BT74R and Tomtom, yet on some there are reported issues with dropped Bluetooth connections. This is not a fault with the GPS unit but reportedly with the Firmware on the N70. The following may help to get over this issue.

Firstly get your N70 firmare updated to version 3.0546.2.3. You can get this done at any of the Nokia service centres, or call your netwrok provider- TomTom state that the N70 using this firmware version should work.

You can find the current version of your N70's firmware by typing *#0000# on the keypad.

Use the following link to find your local dealer who can do the firmware upgrade for you, if needed. http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,77483,00.html

Once you have the said Firmware version, try the following:

  • Delete all current bluetooth pairings on your phone - Go to Bluetooth -> Paired devices -> Options then select "delete all"
  • Now reboot your phone. This is crucial as unless you do this, the N70 will 'remember' all previous paired devices and ask you to pair it again when you next switch on the receiver! Once you've re-booted the phone the N70 loses all this data after you have deleted all pairings
  • Switch on your GPS receiver
  • Go into Tomtom -> Change preferences -> Show GPS Status -> Configure, then if you use a non TT receiver, select "Other bluetooth receiver" and let TT search for and pair the device. You may also get a message from TT asking you to let your SmartPhone or PDA pair the device, but ignore this and click continue. Once you can see the unit is connected, selct 'Done'
  • Now exit TomTom
  • Navigate to Bluetooth -> Pairings on your N70. You may find the GPS device is listed there. If it is, delete it.
  • Reboot the phone again.
  • Start Tomtom, it may ask if you want to accept connection from your bluetooth receiver, select "Yes".

The setup should now work. But for those of you who still have problems, remove all your POI's, including Speed Camera Database, Pocket GPS Speed Camera POI's and you should be fine.

We have come to the conclusion from experience that having any POI's on the memory card causes freezes - we factory reset the phone, installed TomTom and it's worked on every occasion, without the Speed Camera Database though. As soon as Speed Cameras are added, the freezes start to happen.

Hope this guide has been helpful to you. If so, please send link to this page to any of your friends or family who have this issue with their N70.
